The Child Protection Coordinator, under direct supervision of Education and protection Thematic Program Manager is responsible for overall coordination and management of Child Protection projects implemented under Jigjiga Field Office.  

The overall aim of the Child Protection Coordinator will be to assess, design and guide staff to initiate interventions to address violations of children’s rights to protection from abuse, exploitation, violence and neglect and psycho- social distress due to impact of the conflict. The Child Protection Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that quality projects are initiated, and capacities developed to provide protection to children based on Save the Children’s responses minimum standards. The Child Protection Coordinator will be expected to lead on sectoral assessment, project planning, coordination, recruitment, and procurement, usually at Jigjiga field office level. In most circumstances, the post holder will be expected to mentor and/or capacity build existing project staff.

The position holder will work in close partnership and coordination with CP stakeholders, sub cluster coordination BOWYCA, sectors and other local government stakeholders within the targeted locations.

The position holder is also expected to work very closely with the Jigjiga field office Education & Protection Thematic Program Manager.

Dimensions: Communication and relationship management with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Woreda Education Office, Consortium members, and stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Coordinates and supervise the implementation of the child protection projects under Jigjiga field office.
  • Prepare regular progress reports of the project as required to Education & protection Thematic Program Manager and field office head in compliance to rules and guidelines of donor and SCI.
  • Provide feedback and share lessons learned from project implementations?
  • Supports project team and government partners to ensure feasible detailed implementation plan is developed and implemented.
  • Serve as the sub-budget holder for the Child protection project under responsibility.
  • Ensures that appropriate technical back up is given to projects towards smooth implementation of project.
  • Ensures the quality, relevance, and integrated nature of programs in the project.

Budget management

  • Coordinate the periodic child protection project budget revisions as required for the jigjiga field office.
  • Ensures effective and efficient utilization of project budget and other resources for the intended purpose.
  • Ensures that plans are implemented as per agreed and approved budget.
  • Forecast and manage the budget based on the detail implementation plan.
  • Review monthly expenditure Vs phased budget with action in place

Staff management

  • Motivate staff under his/her supervision and build team spirit for effective working relationships.
  • Ensure that staff under supervision properly plan and organize their tasks (e.g. through monthly, quarterly and annual work plans).
  • Ensure that job objectives are set and performances are evaluated timely, with the required quality for supervisees, hold a one-to-one meeting, and produce team report.
  • Accountable for quality deliverables of the team through the provision of appropriate support.
  •  Hold periodic meetings for regular updates and addressing of issues.
  • Facilitate and support the staff development under his/her supervision, including nurturing and coaching on specific issues.

Monitoring, evaluation, and quality assurance

  • Monitor and systematically document project results.
  • Assist and facilitate regularly scheduled reviews of projects with the project team, government partners and stakeholders.

Stakeholders and partners management

  • Foster a collaborative environment and team spirit among government and non-government stakeholders.
  • Liaises with and creates conducive working relationship between SCI and stakeholders in targeted intervention areas.
  • Closely work with government agencies, and stakeholders in the course of project planning and implementation, and to develop their capacity for quality project implementation as well as reporting (based on needs /gap assessment)
  • Conduct regular monitoring visits of the project, government, and partners at the project sites and prepare reports for documentation and follow-up actions.
  • Closely work with stakeholders in the preparation of periodic and project completion reports.

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in fields of Social work, sociology or social anthropology, psychology with a minimum of 5 years related work experience in the area of Child Protection.
  • Experience in working with government counterparts and other partners at various levels Regional to district.  This includes technical support, capacity-building and coordination.
  • Excellent understanding of Child Protection issues in Ethiopia at both field and policy levels in general and excellent understanding of Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action.
  • Practical understanding of the challenges and opportunities in realizing children’s rights in Ethiopia, in relation to thematic area.
  • Experience in managing Child Protection projects in Humanitarian and development contexts.
  • Strong data collection, analysis and report writing skills.
  • Demonstrable experience in M&E
  • Good presentation, training and facilitation skills
  •  Proven ability to manage a complex and demanding workload
  • Good spoken and written English,
  •  Good computer skills (particularly Excel, Word and databases)
  • Familiarity with the target area.
  • Local language is advantageous.
